Airport Lounge Access on Credit Cards: The Real Catch
Complimentary lounge visits sound unlimited, but most cards cap them, require a minimum spend, or use a small fee to unlock them. Here's how it actually works.

Airport lounge access is one of the most advertised credit card perks — and one of the most misunderstood. "Complimentary" almost never means unlimited.
What "complimentary" really means
Most cards grant a fixed number of visits — for example, two domestic visits per quarter, or a set number of international visits per year. Cross that limit and each extra visit is charged to your card.
The spend condition
Many cards now unlock lounge access only if you spent a minimum amount in the previous quarter. Miss the spend target, and your "complimentary" visits for the next quarter simply don't activate.
Always check three things before relying on lounge access: the visit limit, whether there's a minimum-spend condition, and whether domestic and international visits are counted separately.
Guests and networks
Guest entries usually count against your own quota or cost extra. Access is also tied to a network (like Priority Pass or a domestic lounge program), so the lounges you can actually use depend on which network your card supports.
Frequently asked questions
Does complimentary lounge access mean unlimited visits?
Rarely. Most cards give a fixed number of visits per quarter or year. Once you cross the limit, you pay per visit.
Can I take guests into the lounge for free?
Sometimes, but guest visits usually count against your own limit or carry a separate charge. Check the card terms.
